Fire in the Blood does not have the complexity and scope of Suite Francaise nor the character development of David Golder. The young are more prone to actions from the fire which has cooled down with age but past mistakes made in youth are sometimes hidden.

The best thing about this book is not the stories, but the portrait of French country life in the time between world wars.
